Washington, DC - Day 4

We went on a tour of Arlington National Cemetery today. It was a very very hot day. We had the option of walking around the cemetery, but decided to take the tram tour (and this pregnant lady was very glad that we did).

This is one of the first pictures I took while walking around. I loved this little Robin just hanging out. It was so peaceful.
We watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was very impressive.

These guards had little horseshoe-like metal plates on the bottom of their shoes, so that when they walked they would click. They also would do this move where they would swing out their leg and then snap their heels together, which made an audible click.

Just a few steps away from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is this beatuiful amphitheater. Wow.

This monument reads: "Erected by the Government of Canada in honour of the citizens of the United States who served in the Canadian army and gave their lives in the Great War 1914 -1918, the Second World War 1939-1945, & the Korean Campaign 1950-1953." Because the United States did not join these wars at the very beginning, there were many US citizens who went to Canada to join their army to fight. Michael was really taken with this particular monument. I can understand why.

After our stay at Arlington, we went back to the hotel and cooled off for a while, and then ventured back out in the evening for a twilight bus tour of the Capitol. I loved the sunset colors reflecting on the marble buildings.

This was the closest we got to Abraham Lincoln. On my high res image, you can zoom in pretty good and see him sitting inside this monument. Guess we will have to go back to DC in order to see him.
